Africa consists of 54 independent and fully recognized African countries, 8 territories and two independent states. Algeria is the largest country in Africa in terms of area and Nigeria is the largest country in terms of population. Africa is the only continent that extends from the north temperate regions to the south temperate regions. Most of the continent and its countries are located in the northern hemisphere, and a significant number of countries are located in the southern hemisphere. The smallest area of the Africa continent is the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean. The smallest landlocked country of this continent is Gambia.
