Shiraz is the city of poetry and literature and the cultural capital of Iran. The fame of Shiraz is not limited to the borders of Iran and this city has a global reputation. Shiraz is the fifth largest and most populous city in Iran and the most populous city in southern Iran. Shiraz is located in the central part of Fars province, at an altitude of 1486 meters above sea level and in the mountainous region of Zagros, and has a moderate climate. The first mention of the name of Shiraz on Elamite clay tablets dates back to 2000 BC. Tablets written in ancient Elam refer to a city called Tirazis. According to phonetics, it is understood as follows: Tirasis or Sirasis, this name is derived from the name of Sirajis in old Persian, which was changed to Shiraz due to the regular change of sounds in modern Persian language. The name of Shiraz has also been seen on pottery found in the ruins of the Sassanid era in the second century AD. This city was the capital of Iran during the Saffarian, Boyian and Zandian periods.


Culture and Art

Shiraz is known as the city of poetry, wine, gardens, oranges and bergamots, flowers and nightingales. The garden has a special place in Iranian culture and Shiraz has been famous for having many beautiful gardens since ancient times. Shiraz has had many vineyards since ancient times and this has made Shiraz wine famous in the world. Today, most of the gardens of this city are located in its northwest and in Qasr-al-Dasht, Keshan, Chamran and Ma’ali Abad areas. Some of the gardens of Shiraz are very important from a historical point of view and are considered as important tourist centers. The city of Shiraz was the venue of the Shiraz Art Festival between 1968 and 1978. In its time, this festival was the biggest cultural event of its kind in the world.
